2018: In his second season in MLS, Abu made just four substitute appearances for the Columbus Crew. The midfielder was impressive with the ball at his feet as he created five chances with a passing accuracy of 88%. Defensively, Abu recorded three interceptions four clearances and won back possession for his team 10 times. Halfway through the 2018 season, Abu returned to Norway on loan with Valerenga Fotball.
2017: Mohammed Abu made his MLS debut for Columbus in a 1-1 tie against the Chicago Fire on March 4. The Ghanaian midfielder recorded his first assist for the Crew during a 2-1 victory over the LA Galaxy on Aug. 23. In his first season in MLS, Abu made 20 appearances (14 starts) and helped Columbus reach the MLS Cup Playoffs. In the playoffs, Abu made three appearances (2 starts) and was a key contributor in helping Columbus reach the Eastern Conference Finals where they were defeated by Toronto FC on Nov. 29.
Previous Experience
Outside of MLS, Abu has played all over Europe. The midfielder is a product of Manchester CIty’s academy in England and has had stints in the first divisions of France, Germany, Spain and Norway. Abu spent a majority of his career in the Norwegian first division, most notably with Stromsgodset where he made 152 appearances, scoring five goals and providing three assists. Abu made his professional debut with Stromsgodset as a substitute against Molde FK on Sept. 13, 2010. Following two seasons with Columbus Crew, Abu returned to Norway with Valerenga Fotball where he made 37 appearances in the 2019 season before being acquired on loan by D.C. United.
