D.C. United and its charitable arm, United for D.C., today announced the schedule for United Reads during the Fall of 2013. United Reads is a signature program created to encourage elementary school students in the greater Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area to read and to promote the importance of healthy lifestyles. United Reads is currently in its 11th year and has distributed over 81,000 books to local elementary students in underserved communities, serving over 23,000 students through school visits. The program will continue to partner with the Heart of America Foundation to provide new books to every student during D.C. United’s visits to each school this fall.
At each visit, D.C. United players will lead interactive games and activities with the students as well as share their personal experiences and successes with an emphasis on the importance of reading and staying healthy. Players will also sign autographs, take photos and distribute two new books to each student to continue developing their personal libraries.
In addition to the D.C. United players making appearances, the D.C. United staff will further their commitment to the community by reading to selected classrooms at each school. The staff will encourage the younger students to develop and maintain good reading habits. United is proud to begin a new partnership with Patterson Elementary School in the fall of 2013 and further the community reach into Southwest DC.
