D.C. United are hosting tryouts for the 2016 Special Olympics D.C. (SODC) Unified Soccer Team on Thursday, June 23, at RFK’s auxiliary field beginning at 4:30 PM.
United are looking for participants between the ages of 16-20 to become Unified Sports Partners, who are athletes without intellectual disabilities who train and compete in sports alongside their peers with intellectual disabilities. Unified Partners play a valuable role in enriching the lives of Special Olympics' athletes with intellectual disabilities by providing encouragement, understanding and support to help these athletes realize their potential.
Selected participants, who will become a part of the 2016 D.C. United SODC Unified Team to compete against other MLS-affiliated Special Olympics Unified Teams, will receive a full D.C. United kit and the opportunity to travel on an all-expenses-paid trip to United’s away match against Columbus Crew SC on July 16.
This year, the match-ups will be against the Columbus Crew Special Olympics Ohio at MAPFRE stadium in Columbus and the New York Red Bulls Special Olympics New Jersey at RFK stadium in Washington, DC.
All selected players will be required to officially register as a Special Olympics Unified Partner, as well as attend and participate in all team activities including practices, games and social events.
The Special Olympics Unified Sports soccer exchange program is an on-going partnership between D.C. United and Special Olympics D.C. that brings individuals with and without intellectual disabilities together as teammates to participate in unique training, competition and social experiences.
