D.C. United earned an important victory last night in Richmond, as the team met their USL affiliate club in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Below, we break down the match, by the numbers.

After going scoreless in 90 minutes, the teams went into double-overtime, as per US Open Cup rules. Neither team was able to secure a point during the two 15 minute periods, and the game ultimately went into a penalty kick shootout.

Joe Willis stepped into the net ready for PK's, stopping the first two Kickers attempts. Like his performance in New York last year during the playoffs, Willis was calm and confident in the net. For their part, the Dwayne De Rosario, Perry Kitchen, Nick DeLeon, and James Riley each took turns burying their opportunities at goal, earning the win for the Black-and-Red.

Conor Shanosky made his first start for D.C. United in Richmond. The defensive midfielder, who has impressed while spending a majority of this season on loan with the Kickers, earned his first minutes in a major tournament for United. Previously, Shanosky played 14 minutes in an international friendly versus Ajax in 2011.

Travelling support was strong for the Black-and-Red despite the match being held on a Tuesday night. Roughly 60 fans travelled to Richmond and the boisterous group cheered on the team for the entire 120 minute match. The presence of the group was felt and heard from around the stadium, as they proudly waived their flags.
