By the numbers: D.C. United vs Montreal Impact

Chris Pontius

D.C. United’s trip to Montreal ended on a sour note as the hosts turned in one of their best performances of the year in a 3-0 win.  Here’s a look at a few key statistics from Saturday’s result:

55.6%

Amount of possession controlled by Montreal in Saturday’s first half.  Though it felt like D.C. was largely in control through the opening stanza, the Impact actually had more of the ball.  Despite the advantage in possession, Montreal was not all that dangerous.  The hosts produced just one shot in the first 45 minutes.

Number of times Marco Di Vaio was caught in an offsideposition in the first half alone. The veteran striker lived right on the line of legality for much of Saturday’smatch, and more often than not D.C.’s defensive line bested him in thefast-paced game of chess. But the one time Di Vaio beat United’s offsides trap,he capitalized with a superbly taken finish around a well-positioned BillHamid.

16

Open play crosses for the Black-and-Red, compared to justnine for Montreal.  There was atime this season where D.C. was consistently second best when it came to wideservice.  In fact, from April 14through May 12 the club was ‘out-crossed’ in six out of seven matches.  Saturday’s contest marked the thirdstraight in which D.C. has produced more crosses than their opponent.

34/42

Perry Kitchen’s completed passes on the afternoon.  Despite a ton of changes around him,D.C. United’s second-year midfielder continues to do exceptional work.  Marcelo Saragosa’s inclusion in thelineup is allowing him to get up-field more, which means we could see Kitchenbecome more of an offensive threat as the season progresses.
