As Hurricane Sandy firmed her grip on the Washington region Monday and Tuesday with driving rain, high winds, flooding and power outages, D.C. United players rode out the storm in different ways.
Brandon McDonald, a native of Arizona, used his first hurricane experience to clean his apartment from top to bottom, washing his sheets, scrubbing his bathtub, mopping the floors and cleaning the mirrors. He later questioned himself, asking via Twitter, “Is this normal?” It remains unclear if McDonald was questioning the severe weather or his whirlwind cleaning activities.
United captain and the club’s 2012 Volkswagen MVP Chris Pontius hung out with teammate Ethan White and others in his D.C. apartment building, taking time to cook a feast and watch a marathon of the Showtime series “Homeland.”
When asked if he did anything special during the storm, United midfielder Perry Kitchen said, “not much really.” He noted that he never lost power despite the wide outages in the region. He did, though, take the warnings seriously and stocked up on bottled water and food.
Despite being off Monday and Tuesday because of the storm, Black-and-Red players throughout D.C., Maryland and Virginia did have something in common: continued preparation. Workouts were e-mailed to team by the technical staff and players were expected to workout on their own on Tuesday.
