Despite some cold and tricky weather conditions and a rescheduled date, on January 8, D.C. United once again partnered with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Latino Liaison Unit to celebrate Three Kings Day and continue spreading holiday season joy with a toy distribution for local area children.
Three Kings Day is celebrated in many Central and South American cultures, commemorating the day when the Three Wise Men followed the North Star to Bethlehem and found Jesus in the manger, and provided him with gifts. As part of the festivities, local families were invited to come celebrate Three Kings Day at the MPD Boys & Girls club on Shepherd St NW by enjoying music, family fun activities and receiving a donated toy for each child.
D.C. United proudly donated over 100 books & toys that were collected during a month long toy drive that took place in December. Youth were also given the opportunity to take pictures with D.C. United’s MLS Cups, and Talon was on hand to help spread cheer by providing hugs, high fives and pictures with local children. Officers from the Latino Liaison Unit also dressed up as the Three Wise Men and greeted children after receiving a toy of their choosing.
"D.C. United is proud to partner with the MPD Latino Liaison Unit and impact our local Hispanic community in a positive way" Victor Melara, Director of Community Relations said, "Three Kings Day is a popular celebration within the Latino culture where toys and food are shared amongst family and it's very rewarding for us to be a part of this event and share these traditions with our community."
