Washington, D.C. (January 20, 2010) - D.C. United announced today La Nueva (WDCN-LP 87.7 FM), will serve as the club’s official Spanish-language radio partner. The 2010 season will be the first year the FM station will carry United matches. As part of the agreement, all United first team games will be broadcast live on La Nueva 87.7 FM.
“We are very excited to partner with La Nueva and to take the next step in providing our Spanish-speaking fans with great coverage of D.C. United,” said United Sr. Vice President of Marketing Communications Doug Hicks. “La Nueva has quickly shown value in its ability to reach a large audience and will be a great partner of the club in our efforts on and off of the field.”
In addition to the game broadcasts, La Nueva will host an hour-long, live pre-game tailgate party for every D.C. United home game. During the season, La Nueva will also feature a 30-minute D.C. United Block once a week during the show “Patrulla de los Deportes” hosted by Sports Director Herbert Baires from 12 to 1 p.m.
“La Nueva 87.7 is thrilled to be part symbolically of the body that is the 12th player in the field and we will give full support to this team that has conquered the hearts of the fans,” said Walter Torrez II, President/CEO of Media One Communications.
La Nueva’s broadcast team will be led by Baires, a native of El Salvador, who will also serve as the broadcasts’ play-by-play announcer. Baires is no stranger to calling United matches, having previously served as the play-play personality of the club from 1999-2005. During this time, he called United MLS Cup championships in 1999 and 2004. Additional talent to La Nueva’s broadcast team will be announced in the near future.
