D.C. United will go green on social media for their match on Wednesday, October 28 to bring awareness to environmental sustainability and the importance of protecting and preserving our world and community.
Sustainability means meeting our economic, social, and environmental needs, while ensuring that future generations will be able to meet their needs.
D.C. United and Audi are committed to playing our part in keeping the world as healthy as possible. This is why we have taken several steps to ensure our home – Audi Field – is as green as possible.
In May of this year, D.C. United completed the second largest solar panel installation for a soccer-specific Major League Soccer stadium. The 1,700-panel solar system at Audi Field is also the fifth largest across the entire District of Columbia.
Visible by eye, the solar panel system at Audi Field can be seen spanning the stadium’s canopies and rooftop. These system will generate over 787,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy on-site and will reduce CO2 emissions by 556 metric tons annually, equating to the amount of electricity required to power 95 homes for an entire year.
In addition to the newly installed solar panels, Audi Field earned a LEED Golf Certification when the stadium was completed in 2018. The 20,000 seat venue features high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, LED field lighting, a waterless urinal system in the bathrooms, and stormwater management measures that provide storage for more than 55,000 cubic feet of stormwater onsite to help protect the neighboring Anacostia River.
