D.C. United staff and supporters celebrated Earth Day on Saturday by participating in the Anacostia Watershed Society's clean up day on Kingman Island (just across from RFK Stadium's Lot 6). The Black-and-Red joined dozens of volunteers from other local organizations to pick up hundreds of bags of trash and remove invasive plants.
The cleanup event concluded with a cookout and celebration featuring volunteers from all of the cleanup day locations. DC Government officials, and an appearance by United forward and Assistant Coach, Josh Wolff.
SUNDAY EVENTS
United's will continue to participate in Earth Day on Sunday, April 22 during the first team's match against the New York Red Bulls. Portland, Ore.-based Bonneville Environmental Foundation will offset 100 percent of the electricity used at RFK Stadium during the match. The initiative will be performed using Renewable Energy Certificates (100 percent wind resources) purchased from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, and will support enough wind energy to power an average U.S. home for over 23 years.
In addition to the electricity offset, the National Resources Defense Council will provide Eco-Tip Post Cards upon entry into the stadium and 1,000 seed packets provided by the America the Beautiful Fund will be distributed postgame.
