D.C. United defender Steven Birnbaum underwent surgery to remove bone spurs and loose fragments in his left ankle on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Dr. Lew Schon, Director of Orthopedic Innovation at The Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, performed the surgery.
Birnbaum is expected to be sidelined for 8-12 weeks as he completes rehabilitation.
