United lost 2-0 to Montreal on July 1 at Stade Saputo after two first half goals in rapid succession secured the win for the Impact.
After a bright attacking start from United, Olsenās team created multiple offensive opportunities but a well-placed strike by Swiss international, Blerim Dzemaili in the 21st minute gave the Impact the lead. Montreal then added a second two minutes later when Chris Duvall slotted a first-time volley off a clever chipped pass from Dzemaili into the right corner of the goal. Ian Harkes then had a first-half stoppage-time header sail just over the crossbar as United headed into halftime scoreless and down two goals.
The second half saw Montreal sit back in their defensive third and counterattack the Black-and-Red as they pressed high for a goal. Luciano Acosta created a handful of chances after finding space for himself with some crafty footwork. Despite Acosta forcing a save from Evan Bush and hitting the woodwork, United were unable to find a goal.
āWe have to stay patient even when the first couple of opportunities donāt go in," Harkes said. "We were in the right positions and spaces to have those quality chances but the final ball wasnāt there."
While he didn't score, United's recent acquisition Deshorn Brown was lively in his first start for his new club. āIt felt good to start," the Jamaican said. "My fitness isnāt where I want it to be. Iāve just got to keep pushing myself and hope for the best.ā
