There's plenty of elite girls' soccer action to watch around the Washington D.C. area this weekend, as the majority of the Washington Area Girls Soccer League squads have matches on Saturday and Sunday.
After last weekend's opening play, several teams have put themselves at the top of their brackets, but many other divisions remain wide open for the taking. It's a long season, however, so even the early leaders will have to keep their best foot forward to retain their positions.
High School Divisions
In High School Division 1, last week's sole winner, MCLN Fusion, takes on ASC Premier Gold on Saturday, then tackles DSC Sparks on Sunday. If the Fusion can post two wins this weekend, they will enjoy a hearty lead on the competition.
On Sunday, every team in the division will be playing, which should create a clearer picture of the season's progress thus far.
In Division 2, the stakes are much more open since five of the eight teams are standing on 3 points so far, though only three of those teams earned their tallies from winning last weekend. DCST Heat is the only squad playing back-to-back this weekend, and if they can win both they will shoot to the top of the division.
Division 1 Action
In the Under-14, U-13 and U-12 first divisions, the action definitely heats up this weekend. Loudoun 96G Red, who claimed 3 points last weekend in U14 competition, faces off against FASA Elite Impact on Sunday, and CYA Chaos, who also won on April 3, will take on FREE Storm. While the entire division will play this weekend, they will only compete on Sunday.
In the U-13 age group, SYA FCV and SAC United Premier were the only two squads to come away with a win last week, and the United Premier girls have a chance of extending their lead if they can defeat the TSC Red Storm on Saturday and the ODFC Revolution on Sunday. SYA FCV doesn't play again until April 17.
However, the MSC Coyotes Green, who won Division 1 last fall, are opening their run for another title against the TSC Red Storm on Sunday.
Finally, the U-12s have one of the biggest Division 1 groups, with 13 teams battling it out for bragging rights. Last year's Division 1 champs, Loudoun 98G Red, are off to a quick start with two wins under their belt already. They aren't playing this weekend, giving other squads a chance to catch up on points. With five other teams carrying 3 or more points, the U-12 division is bound to be a battle to the finish.
