As the 2017 MLS SuperDraft approaches, Dave Kasper, United general manager and VP of soccer operations, along with head coach Ben Olsen and the technical staff are hard at work identifying players with potential to draft on Friday. Currently, the Black-and-Red possess four picks across the four rounds, the first three occurring in rounds one and two. The first two round of the SuperDraft take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday, Jan. 13, while rounds three and four are held via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Last year, United selected Julian Büscher with the 11th overall pick in the first round out of Syracuse University.
In 2015, they selected Miguel Aguilar out of the University of San Francisco with the 17th pick. 2016 All Star and USMNT defender Steve Birnbaum was the team's first pick in 2014, selected second overall out of the University of California after trading the number one overall pick with the Philadelphia Union. Other previous draft picks include Taylor Kemp (who was recently called into his first national team camp), Nick DeLeon, Perry Kitchen and Chris Pontius.
