In conjunction with MLS’ third annual Greener Goals Week of Service, the D.C. United front office and volunteers from nearby communities teamed up with Anacostia Riverkeeper for a storm drain mural painting project in the Buzzard Point community.
Front office staff and volunteers worked together to paint murals on six storm drains near Audi Field to raise awareness of storm drains' connections to local waterways. Each storm drain design included messaging to educate the community to not dump and to know that the drains lead to local waterways.
“Most people want to do what they can to improve their environment,” Trey Sherard, Outreach Coordinator for Anacostia Riverkeeper, said. “Stenciling storm drains is one way to remind thousands of passerbys how they can help protect the environment by teaching them that they have a watershed address.”
With a mission to protect and restore our rivers, Anacostia Riverkeeper is committed to building an environment that will make the Anacostia and Potomac rivers swimmable and fishable for the community. To learn more visit anacostiariverkeeper.org.
