D.C. United continued their month-long initiative to Kick Childhood Cancer by visiting Children’s National Medical Center on September 18. In conjunction with Hope for Henry, United midfielders Paul Arriola and Russell Canouse and defenders Steven Birnbaum and Vytas spent time with youth receiving treatment at Children’s National Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
Players visited with patients ranging from infants to teenagers and passed out gifts including hats, t-shirts and soccer balls. Players also went bedside and gifted children who were not able to leave due to treatments.
“Kids who have been diagnosed with cancer face long hospitalizations, multiple needle sticks, and the experience of being isolated from friends and family” Carolyn Fung, Director National Programs for Hope for Henry, said. “The player visits really help kick childhood cancer by bringing smiles, laughter, and hope to the sickest kids in our city."
During the month of September, D.C. United have teamed up with Major League Soccer for its fifth annual Kick Childhood Cancer campaign to raise awareness and funds during Childhood Cancer Awareness month. The league-wide campaign will be promoted nationally through MLS broadcasts, in-stadium activations, and social and digital channels by all 22 MLS clubs throughout the month.
