Looking to get back on track following the loss last weekend to Orlando City SC, United couldn't reverse the trend, falling to the Chicago Fire on Sept. 16, exactly a year to the day since their last tip to the Windy City.
D.C. started out very strong, dominating possession early on but couldn't get one past Fire goalkeeper Matt Lampson. Bill Hamid then came up with several incredible saves to keep the match scoreless and deny Nemanja Nikolic.
Not long after, the 26-year-old Virginia native made another impressive save, tipping the ball out to preserve the scoreline for the time being.
After the Black-and-Red came out of halftime down one because of an own goal, Acosta looked to even the match and ripped a shirt from just outside the penalty area, which Lampson saved.
A well-worked set piece also brought D.C. close, with Patrick Mullins' shot saved by Lampson after Paul Arriola ran over the dead ball.
After Chicago put away two more goals, including a penalty in stoppage time by the Hungarian Nikolic, the match ended 3-0 in the Fire's favor.
United return to RFK to host the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, Aug. 23.
