D.C. United have extended the contract of 25-year-old forward Patrick Mullins. Mullins scored eight goals and recorded two assists in 14 appearances after joining the Black-and-Red via trade with New York City FC on July 20.
The Louisiana native scored his first goal for D.C. United in his full debut, a 1-1 draw with Montreal on July 31 at RFK Stadium. The forward, whose work rate on the field immediately won over fans, was immediately recognized for his stellar performances (including his first hat trick against Chicago — the first for a D.C. United player since June 11, 2014 — on Aug. 27.) and earned four MLS Team of the Week selections, two AT&T Goal of the Week nominations and an Etihad Player of the Month nomination in August.
"Patrick is a player who had a major breakout after we traded for him last summer," Dave Kasper, United general manager and vice president of soccer operations, said. "His work ethic on both sides of the ball, positional awareness, and nose for the goal affect the outcome of games week after week. Securing Patrick's future is another big step for the club, and we look forward to his contributions this season and beyond."
The July acquisition of Mullins was the final piece of D.C. United¹s 2016 roster rebuild, which saw them become the most explosive team in MLS following the All-Star break. With Mullins on the field, the Black-and-Red scored 33 goals and led the league in almost every offensive category. United scored multiple goals in every one of the final nine regular season matches, tying a club record for most consecutive multi-goal games (1996). The Black-and-Red were also in the best attacking form in club history; their 27 goals over the final 10 matches of the regular season were more than any other playoff year.
The 25-year-old two-time MAC Hermann Trophy winner (2012 and 2013) will look to build on a record year where he scored more goals (8) and had more shots on target (23) than in his previous two seasons.
