This spring, an additional $177,756 will be going toward D.C. residents in need thanks to the efforts of the Black-and-Red family, Safeway, ABC7, and local customers.

During the month of March, D.C. United and ABC7 teamed up with Safeway to launch the first-ever Safeway Foundation KICK HUNGER fundraising campaign. Safeway stores across the District, Maryland and Virginia collected customer donations at checkouts and raised $355,512 to help feed local families in need. A donation of $177,756 will be made to the Capital Area Food Bank to support hunger relief in the District, which will provide an estimated 440,000 meals for local residents.

To kick off the campaign, United defender Kofi Opare and goalkeeper Steve Clark competed against ABC7 on-air personalities Adrianna Hopkins and Kidd O'Shea in a supermarket scavenger hunt to see who could fill their shopping cart full of healthy food the fastest. All food items gathered during the competition were donated to the Capital Area Food Bank.

Capital Area Food Bank works to increase access to nutritious food for those affected by hunger in the D.C. Metropolitan area, and to educate people on issues surrounding hunger and nutrition. Safeway is the official grocery partner of D.C. United.

Thank you to all the fans and D.C. residents who helped support the cause!
