On Wednesday, D.C. United and adidas teamed up to surprise a group of nine girls from across the District with a special gear donation for their upcoming trip to Russia where they'll represent the USA in the Street Child World Cup.
The young women, ages 14-17, will be in Moscow from May 10-18, joining more than 450 teens representing 24 countries across the globe in the Street Child World Cup. The Street Child World Cup is a soccer tournament and a child rights conference for young people from around the world who are at risk of or have faced homelessness.
Each of the Team USA girls has been at risk of homelessness in Washington, D.C., and each has overcome the many obstacles they and their families have faced, allowing them to partake in this year's tournament. In the coming week, the young women will represent the Stars-and-Stripes on the soccer field, but they will also use the platform of the Street Child World Cup to give a voice to the challenges that young people at risk of homelessness face across the U.S. According to a recent study, more than 4 million young people in America face homelessness on their own.
