WASHINGTON -- D.C. United have acquired winger Lloyd Sam from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for General Allocation Money.
Sam was instrumental during the Red Bulls’ 2015 record-breaking season and the club’s second Supporters’ Shield win. The Leeds, England native had a career year, adding 10 goals and seven assists, four of which were game-winning goals or assists.
“Lloyd is a dangerous winger and has challenged us for years with the Red Bulls,” said Dave Kasper, United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations. “He is a creative player who not only generates many chances from wide areas with quality service but he is also a proven goal scorer.”
The Ghanaian international has been a valuable offensive weapon for the Red Bulls, finishing in the top two on the team for goals or assists in the past two seasons. He has recorded 20 goals and 22 assists in 106 appearances (82 starts).
Sam signed with England’s Charlton Athletic at 18 years old and spent seven seasons with the team. He then spent two seasons with Leeds United, appearing 35 times before being transferred to New York Red Bulls on August 12, 2012.
