D.C. United U-17 Academy side fell to tournament host FC Dallas in the semifinals of the 2011 Generation adidas MLS Cup. Following this result, United went on to play Chivas USA in the third place game, eventually losing by a score of 6-0.
Despite winning its group, D.C. United was unable to muster any kind of rhythm against the hometown side on July 29, falling in the semifinals by a score of 3-0. FC Dallas saw goals from three different forwards in the win, which proved too much for the Black-and-Red to overcome.
“The Generation adidas Cup was a great experience for some of our youngest boys, as they were given the opportunity to play against all MLS teams,” said U-17 Head Coach Roberto Da Silva. “The level of the competition was great, as we were able to compete against the best players in the country. I am proud of the whole team, and the future of our Academy is promising thanks to the new pool of talented players that we saw in this competition.”
This marks the first time in five years that United has failed to compete in the championship game of the Generation adidas Cup. The Black-and-Red entered the tournament as defending champions, and had reached the semifinals five consecutive years.
United’s U-15 Academy side was also in action at the Generation adidas Cup last week. Unfortunately for United, the Black-and-Red were shutout three times in group play, finishing at the bottom of their group. United did manage to win its last group phase game against Houston, by a score of 2-1.
