D.C. United defender Steven Birnbaum has been named to the U.S. Men's National Team final roster ahead of the Copa America Centenario this summer. Birnbaum, 25, has made 54 league appearances for the Black-and-Red, played more than 1800 minutes in his first two years in MLS and was a rookie of the year finalist in 2014.
The California native has four caps for the national team, making his World Cup Qualifying debut against Guatemala in March of this year. He scored his first international goal against Iceland on January 31, heading home a Michael Bradley corner in stoppage time to earn the Red, White and Blue a dramatic victory at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
"I'm super thankful for the opportunity," Birnbaum said. "This is one of the biggest tournaments and I'm glad I can be a part of it and represent my country."
Birnbaum will join the team in Dallas on Monday, May 23, along with all the other MLS-based players.
