A four goal performance from Chandler Hoffman fueled a 6-0 Union victory over D.C. United in a reserve league match Tuesday at PPL Park. The Union tallied their first in the 15th minute; after Hoffman took a ball played in by midfielder Roger Torres and slotted it past United goalkeeper Joe Willis.
“It felt good, it felt really good to get out there and get a chance to show the coaches what I can do,” said Hoffman. “Now, I am just hoping that it gets me to where I want to be [with the first team.]"
D.C. United was led by forward Maicon Santos with three shots on goal. United brought a fairly light squad complete with five from their Academy and seven first-team players. All five Academy players received slots in United's starting lineup.
“This is a reserve match and it’s great in matches like these for our younger guys to get an opportunity and to get some games under their belt,” Chabala said after the match. “But we can’t be getting down this much in games, especially letting up those goals like we did in the last minutes of the game.”
Those last minute goals were both courtesy of Hoffman, who put a penalty kick past Willis in the 84th minute, after Josue Martinez was taken down in the box. Hoffman would cap the affair in stoppage, the first four goal game for the rookie since “high school.”
The Union's remaining two goals were scored by Jimmy McLaughlin in the 61st and Josué Martinez in the 80th. In goal for the Union, Chris Konopka made four saves on the day while United’s Willis was credited for eight saves on 17 Union shots.
