On Friday night, D.C. United took to the pitch on a muggy night at Audi Field to face off against the Revolution. The Black-and-Red were looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance on the road against Dallas, but the game didn’t get off to a good start. The New England Revolution sent a long ball down to Teal Bunbury, who beat his defender and sent the ball into the far corner for an early goal. In the 4th minute, New England had a 1-0 lead.
The scoreline doubled for the Revolution in the 32nd minute. The Revs crossed the ball into the box and launched a shot at Bill Hamid. Hamid blocked the shot but Carles Gil knocked in the rebound for New England’s second goal of the game.
D.C. United got a goal back right before the end of the first half. In the 43rd minute, Paul Arriola sent a long cross into the box. Leonardo Jara got on the end of the ball, and while New England goalkeeper Matt Turner got a hand to it, he couldn’t stop the ball from finding the back of the net. The halftime score was 2-1 in favor of New England, but the Black-and-Red were starting to show signs of life.
In the second half, D.C. United started to create some promising attacking chances. In the 63rd minute, they got another big bounce: a New England Revolution red card. Wilfried Zahibo got his second yellow card of the night, resulting in him being sent off and New England going down to ten men.
The game went back-and-forth for much of the second half. But in the 86th minute, D.C. United finally found their equalizer. Wayne Rooney took a free kick from about 25-yards out and launched it into the middle of the box. Quincy Amarikwa got in front of the defense and sent the ball past Turner for his first MLS goal for the Black-and-Red. D.C. United had tied the game 2-2.
The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with D.C. United splitting points with the Revolution just as they did on the road earlier this year. D.C. United will be hitting the road for an MLS match against FC Cincinnati on Thursday, July 18th.
