steven birnbaum with the us men's national team in january 2015

D.C. United: When did they tell you that you were going to get the start?
Steven Birnbaum: I had been practicing with the starting lineup for a couple days leading up to the game, so I had an idea that it was a possibility. Then, the day before, they let me know.

DCU: Talk us through your emotions during warm-ups, and specifically at the starting whistle.
SB: My emotions we all over the place during warm-up. I was in shock a little bit that I was doing something that I have always dreamed about. When the National Anthem was playing, it was an amazing feeling to stand there and represent my country. It's something I will always remember.

DCU: There was an outpouring of support from fans of yours on social media. Have you had a chance to see the messages?
SB: I was able to see most of the social media comments when we got back to the hotel late last night. It was amazing that so many people gave me so much support, I'm very thankful. It was a special moment for me and all my family and friends have been great!

DCU: In general, how has National Team camp been?
SB: The overall experience has been awesome. It's been really cool to meet and play with guys. Everyone has been super welcoming and supportive throughout the whole process. It's a great group of guys, and I'm very fortunate and thankful to be here.

DCU: What's the best food you've had to eat in Chile?
SB: The best food I've had since I've been here is the fruit, especially the strawberries. They have been phenomenal.

DCU: Lastly, are you excited to get back to work with the Black-and-Red?
SB: Yes, I am very excited to get back to DCU and get things going again! Miss the guys and can't wait to be back in the swing of things. I'm ready to get to work!
