Q&A: Michael Seaton in Jamaica with the Jamaican National Team

Michael Seaton 2014

Dcunited.com caught up with D.C. United Homegrown forward Michael Seaton after the Jamaican National Team won the Caribbean Cup. Seaton featured in both 15-minute halves of overtime in the final.

Overall, how was your first Caribbean Cup? Is it what you expected?
Michael Seaton: The tournament was great. Since this was my first one, I did not know what to expect, but I loved it.

What have you learned about yourself, not only as a soccer player, but as a person, from spending time with the Jamaica National Team?

Seaton:
I have learned that I can adapt to different styles of play while also playing in different environments. Luckily, I am around some players who I have played with before, so there is some familiarity with the team. We all have the same interests, winning games and playing for our country, which helps make me more comfortable on and off the field.

What does it feel like to be the youngest player at the tournament?
Seaton: It’s pretty crazy to think that I am not only the "baby" on the team, but also for the entire tournament. Regardless of age, it’s always an honor to be given an opportunity like this to represent my country and play the game I love.

Have you been able to catch up with family and friends while you were down there? If so, who?
Seaton: The first week I was here, I got the weekend off and I went to Kingston to visit my Grandma Pam and aunt along with cousins and friends. I went to the beach and just hung out enjoying the nice weather.

What is the best part about playing for Jamaica and representing your home country?
Seaton: The best part about playing for Jamaica is having the support of your family and friends. I get so much support from people who I do not even know. Family travels miles just to see you play; it’s a great feeling. Representing your country is always an honor, and I wear my kit with pride. I give 100% each time I wear it. My mom flew down here to surprise me and to offer her support. Her friends drove for hours just to see her son play. What more support could anyone ask for?

What are your plans for the off-season once this tournament is over? What do you want to work and improve on for next season?
Seaton: Hopefully, I can be involved in the U-20 World Cup qualifiers here in January. After that, I need to continue to train to stay in shape for the upcoming season. I need to work on my finishing as well as other aspects of my game, but as a striker, finishing is very important. Oh yeah…and my penalty taking skills.

What was the feeling like when you won the Caribbean Cup?
Seaton: For me, it was more relief than anything. This team has been through so much, and we were able to dig deep and get the win, which is a huge win for us. To say we are all happy is an understatement.
