D.C. United Defender, Frédéric Brillant
On the result...
“We wanted to win before the small break, we wanted to win this game to finish. It was very important to win this game, to stay on the top of the conference. We fought strong all game, we were very disappointed. We have to look onto the next game. Now we have a small break, we have to take the small break since we have had some very busy months that we have played. We have a lot of injuries too, but we are there, we competed, we just don’t have the points. The season is not finished, if we want to finish where we are we have to work all the time and be strong and be very good each game because each game is like we said today, all teams can beat all teams. We have to be ready. If we won the last two games, but now we are only 2 points ahead if you check the standings. We should get the wins, not the draw, but we are not so bad, we are still there. And hopefully, we are going to stay there. This is the year where we can do something. We need to keep working."
D.C. United Defender, Steven Birnbaum
On the injury...
“They took it out and put stitches, 13 or something. Everything is clear, it is just another gash. I think it was one of the things that started bleeding right away, it all kind of just started coming out. I was in another room getting stitches and I asked if we scored because I could hear the crowd and they were like 'yeah, we scored' but I was able to catch the last 5-10 minutes of the game from in here."
On the upcoming break...
"The break is coming at the perfect time. We have played more games than anyone in the league, and it is just one of those things where we have some injuries and we are in a little bit of a lull from the travel of the past 3 weeks. I think it is a great time for us to get away and recharge so we are ready to go next time.”
San Jose Goalkeeper, Daniel Vega
Overall thoughts on the match…
“I think we had a good trip, getting four points against two big teams. So, we are very proud of ourselves because we are working as a team. The group today, they are very pleased. The guys who came in did a very good job. We are very proud as a group because we are working hard and the most important thing is to be together. Because this is the only way we can have success.”
Thoughts on his impressive saves…
“Every single player, we are trying to give our best. We are trying to be in good condition. So, this part of the work we do every day. I repeat again: we are very proud because we are playing as a team. And when you win playing in that way, you enjoy it a lot. Because we have no stars. We don’t win or have very good games because of individuals. It’s all about the team. We are very proud.”
San Jose Defender, Nick Lima
Overall thoughts on the match…
“We came out in the first half and we had control of it and we kept the ball for long periods of time. We were working hard and I thought it was a very good team performance. They got a goal there in the second and they put a lot of pressure on us. I think we did well to weather it, at times. I think there are a couple of times we could have done better with our chances but I think overall it’s a good road trip and a growing team.”
On not letting D.C. take control…
“That was a focus, to come out with high energy from the beginning. We can’t let them come out on the front foot and I think we did a good job of that. But they’re a good team. And they had their chances, and I think we did a good job holding them to one.”
