Talk about closure.
Four years removed from the heartbreaking loss to Japan in the 2011 Women's World Cup final, the United States got their revenge, winning 5-2 in Vancouver on Sunday night.
The day after America's 239th birthday, it was the Americans who stormed right out of the gate, and Carli Lloyd started the night off with a bang, scoring in just the third minute and completing a hat trick after just 16 minutes. The New Jersey native took home the tournament's Golden Ball as the top player, and Japan's head coach Norio Sasaki, summed it up to The New York Times: "We are a bit embarassed. She is an excellent player."
The victory marked the third Women's World cup victory for the Americans, prompting Nike to unveil a third star on the kit.
The jerseys will be presented to the entire team on Fox Sports 1 at 1 PM, where the players will reflect on their experiences throughout the World Cup.
