D.C. United is in the Knockout Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, hosting the New England Revolution at RFK Stadium on Oct. 28. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM with the match airing on UniMas and CSN+.
Reliving #DCvNE
When D.C. United once again welcome the Revolution to the nation’s capital, it will be the fourth time the teams have met in the postseason, with United winning 3 of four matches.
In 2004, the two teams clashed in arguably the most epic conference final in league history, which included spectacular goals from Alecko Eskandarian and Christian Gomez in a 3-3 draw before the Black-and-Red prevailed in penalty kicks and went on to win the 2004 championship.
Season Series
The two Eastern Conference foes have played twice this season; United won at RFK in June and drew 1-1 in Foxborough back in May. After scoring two unanswered goals to complete a come-from-behind victory, the win in June pushed the Black-and-Red seven points clear of second-place New England. Chris Rolfe scored the game-tying goal in the 70th minute, canceling out former United forward Charlie Davies' first-half strike. Rolfe would score a penalty 11 minutes later to wrap up the victory on a blisteringly hot day at RFK.
Olsen vs. Heaps
Back in 2004 when United beat New England in penalties, two players on the field that day will be on the sidelines Wednesday. Both Ben Olsen and Jay Heaps started and played all 120 minutes in that spectacular match 11 years ago for D.C. United and the New England Revolution. They have both gone on to coach their respective teams, with Coach Olsen currently holding the upper hand in their coaching matchup (5-3-2).
Wednesday “Winsday”
The Black-and-Red like playing midweek games. In seven Wednesday matches (all competitions) in 2015, United are 6-1 with a 3-0 record at home. They have outscored the opposition 12-5 in that stretch, including 7-3 at RFK Stadium.
Rainy Days
The forecast is calling for lots of rain, and everyone remembers what happened last time the Black-and-Red played in the rain…
