United defenders Taylor Kemp and Steve Birnbaum have been nominated for MLS Goal of the Week (Week 22) for their goals against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, August 6. Kemp, 26, scored his first goal of the season spectacularly, weaving past multiple Union players before unleashing a left-footed strike in the bottom far corner of Andre Blake's net. The goal opened the scoring in the 16th minute and was Kemp's first since August 1, 2015 (which also earned him Goal of the Week honors).
Kemp's fellow defender Birnbaum scored in dramatic fashion, getting on the end of a Patrick Nyarko cross in the fourth minute of stoppage time and heading the ball past Blake. The goal earned the Black-and-Red a point, their second consecutive home draw, and was Birnbaum's first of the year as well. The California native scored two goals in 2015.
