The Atlantic Soccer League will wrap up their regular season schedule in Richmond, Virginia this weekend as part of the prestigious Jefferson Cup tournament. As one of the top events in the country, the Jefferson Cup will play host to the 15 ASL clubs providing quality competition, great facilities and top level exposure for its players, teams and clubs.
The heavy rains in the Virginia area have not effected play, as all ASL games are scheduled to take place on the new synthetic turf fields at SportsQuest, a new multi-million dollar sports campus that has been secured by the Richmond Strikers for both boys and girls Jefferson Cup weekends.
“We are proud to be associated with this event and energized about match weekend #3 for the league.” says ASL President Dewan Bader. “The action is heating up as the ASL teams position themselves within the league table and prepare for the inaugural ASL Championships in Columbia Maryland this May. No better environment than what the Jefferson Cup provides and our member clubs are excited to be a part of this.”
In addition to the excitement of event weekend #3, the ASL has just announced plans to add U14’s for year two as well as a girls division.
“Adding the U14’s makes sense for our member clubs as player development is the priority and exposing these players to this high level league structure will motivate them to continue to train and develop as top level players.” says ASL Commissioner Kevin Darcy. “The clubs are very excited about adding the girls division as the model is now established and the addition is a natural fit. We are receiving a lot of inquiries and interest from clubs on the East Coast and will strategically expand with quality clubs that have the proper structure and developmental model. It is important that the focus of expansion is on adding quality and not quantity of teams.”
