For the first time this season, four United players (Bill Hamid, Lloyd Sam, Bobby Boswell and Patrick Mullins) have been named to the MLS Team of the Week. First half goals from Mullins and Boswell, both off of Sam assists, and eight saves from Hamid (tied for a career-high), led the Black-and-Red to a 3-1 victory over New York City FC on Sunday, Oct. 11 at RFK Stadium.
Boswell, who also started his 350th regular season MLS match (third all-time and second among active players), scored his second goal of the season off a Lloyd Sam corner in the 31st minute to double United's lead. The captain also led the team in clearances with seven.
Sam played provider on the first goal as well, taking a decisive, splitting pass from Luciano Acosta and playing it across the face of goal to Mullins, who finished the move for his eighth goal of the season (a career high). Sam's two assists gave him 10 for the year, also a career high for the Ghanaian.
Hamid's eight saves were his highest single-game total this season, and denied numerous New York City FC players throughout the afternoon. The match was his 20th start of 2016, marking the sixth consecutive year Hamid has played in at least 20 games.
