D.C. United partnered with Leidos and Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia on Saturday October 25, to renovate a home on Princess Street in Alexandria, Va. Members of D.C. United’s front office staff and volunteers from Leidos got their hands dirty helping with the renovation of a home that will be given to a deserving, low-income family.
Volunteers gathered in the morning and worked into the afternoon to work on projects which included sanding and painting door trims, installing support beams, assembling doors, and installing an underground drain in the homes backyard. The combined efforts helped bring the home that much closer to its completion.
The build was part of a nation-wide campaign initiated by Leidos during calendar year 2014 - a “month of giving” now spanning several months and supporting dozens of projects with Habitat for Humanity affiliates in 10 states (AZ, CA, FL, LA, MA, MD, OH, TN, TX, and VA). Support to Habitat for Humanity of NOVA also included a town house rehab project in Annandale, Va (Garbo Court Project) as well as an upcoming two-house build project in southern Alexandria, Va (Clayborne Project).
Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia’s unique model of affordable housing is focused on home ownership. Habitat homeowners secure a no-interest mortgage, while the non-profit secures corporate sponsorship, in-kind donations, and volunteer labor to make the home affordable. Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia (Habitat NOVA) was founded in 1990, and to date has built 80 homes, rehabilitated 4 homes and repaired 20 homes, benefiting more than 400 people. As a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat NOVA serves the counties of Fairfax and Arlington and the Cities of Falls Church, Fairfax, and Alexandria.
