Up and at ‘em early in the morning:
The last game for D.C. United’s U-16s fell on Easter Sunday against the Chicago Fire at 8:30 a.m. CST. After six straight days of evening games, United played its last game before the dew was gone on the fresh cut grass of the Toyota Soccer Center. Chicago came out firing and scored in the second minute. The Black-and-Red attacked for the next 55 minutes, hitting the post four times, but it could not convert its chances. Chicago scored two more goals before the game was over, giving United its second loss of the Generation adidas Cup.
“We thought the score didn’t reflect the nature of the entire match,” said D.C. United U-16 Head Coach Tom Torres. “After conceding the goal in the 2nd minute, we were constantly knocking on the door until the second goal was scored with 12 minutes left in the match. We felt that our boys deserved to get on the sheet with their constant attacking pressure, but we were just unlucky today.”
Notes on Generation adidas Cup:
D.C. United went 3-2-0 during the tournament, scored 10 goals and played against five other MLS Academy teams. Many of these players this year will be eligible for next years GA Cup.
“Part of the learning experience of this event is to get the chance to compete against several MLS clubs that we don’t get to play often,” said Torres. “The trip was a success in every aspect and we know the boys learned from each day and improved upon their overall development as players.“
