When you ask Nick DeLeon what his goal celebration is, he pulls up his jersey sleeve, reveals a D.C. United tattoo on his right bicep, and kisses the Black-and-Red wordmark. That's how much D.C. United means to DeLeon, and DeLeon has meant just as much to D.C. United.
It's no secret that DeLeon has been an integral part of Ben Olsen's squad since coming to the District in 2012. The Phoenix native has gone from a 2012 Major League Soccer Rookie of the Year finalist to the most tenured player on the current Black-and-Red roster. On Saturday, DeLeon made his 150th regular season start for United, a testament to the 27-year-old's work rate and journey with the club.
An all-purpose player, DeLeon has continued to evolve over the years, stepping up wherever there's a need, whether it's as a winger, an outside back or something else. DeLeon has had no problem adjusting to a new playing position if it means he'll be able to compete for his teammates come matchday.
"I've been able to adapt because I want to play," DeLeon said. "I'm going to go where Ben [Olsen] says, and if it keeps me on the field that's what I'm going to do."
While the 27-year-old's versatility has remained an asset, his veteran leadership has added to his value over the years—the midfielder knows how important it is to have a voice in the locker room, and is focusing on assuming that role in 2018.
“I’ve been around and I know what it’s like to be the rookie or new guy in the locker room,” DeLeon said during preseason camp. “I know I have to set an example and use my voice in the locker room. I definitely feel a responsibility to step up as a leader.”
The faces around DeLeon have changed over the years, but the midfielder's cool, calm, and collected demeanor has remained the same. His knowledge of the game and confidence on the ball help set the standard for younger players still acclimating to the league, while his journey from SuperDraft pick to most-tenured roster player helps him understand the importance of creating a welcoming, cohesive environment in the locker room.
And while 150 career starts is a major milestone for any player, to make every career start with the same club is particularly significant. Like his tattoo suggests, the Black-and-Red have remained a staple in DeLeon's career, and DeLeon has remained a staple in the club.
"It means a lot to reach 150 starts. I honestly didn't know it, I was just getting congratulations from guys and that's how I found out. It's a big milestone in my career and to spend it all with D.C. United is pretty special."
