D.C. United’s U-23 team had an excellent showing in NPSL this season. The talented squad went undefeated in the regular season, but dropped its first playoff match 1-0 to the Greater Binghamton Futbol Club Thunder (GBFC). Lucas Heffron of GBFC netted the game winner off an assist from Bozidar Jelovac in the 52nd minute. Though the U-23s out-shot GBFC 7-4, the Mid-Atlantic Conference champions were unable to find an answer to the Thunder’s lone goal.
“It was an excellent season soured only slightly by the playoff loss,” said U-23 Head Coach Amos Magee. The club goals of continuing to develop our graduated academy players, integrate our current academy players, evaluate players outside our academy and serve the community were met and surpassed.”
As is the case with the First Team, winning championships is the goal, but within the youth structure, development is key.
“Several players on our U-23 team were able to train with the First Team and performed very well,” Magee stated. “The outstanding fan support we received at our home and away games was special for these developing players. We expect to build on this excellent season and grow the U-23 team into the elite pre-professional team in the area.”
