D.C. United Re-sign Midfielder Felipe Martins through 2021

Felipe re-sign

D.C. United and midfielder Felipe Martins have agreed to a one-year contract extension, keeping the player at the club through the 2021 season, with an option for the 2022 season.
Martins was acquired by D.C. United via a trade with Vancouver Whitecaps FC in August 2019. Since joining the Black-and-Red, the Brazilian midfielder has started in every Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season appearance he has made for the club (16) and recorded three (3) assists. His 2020 season was cut short when he suffered a campaign-ending ACL tear in a training session in September.
“Felipe is a veteran leader for our club. His presence in both the locker room and on the field, paired with his qualities on and off the ball make him a valuable member for us now and moving forward,” said Dave Kasper, General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations for D.C. United. “We know Felipe will return stronger than ever next season and we look forward to him continuing to play a leadership role for us.”
Martins’ professional career began in 2008 in the Italian third tier with Calcio Padova. After making five appearances in Italy, the Brazilian joined FC Lugano in Switzerland’s first tier, where he made 57 appearances recording eight goals. He arrived in MLS in 2011 when he joined the Montreal Impact. The midfielder also had stints with the New York Red Bulls and the Vancouver Whitecaps before he joined D.C. United on Aug. 6, 2019.  In total, Felipe has scored 24 goals and recorded 51 assists in 256 MLS Regular Season appearances.
