WASHINGTON (Sept. 24, 2015) – D.C. United has announced that the club and midfielder Chris Rolfe have agreed to a contract extension. In his ninth season in Major League Soccer and his second with the Black-and-Red, Rolfe has a career-high and team-leading 10 goals and four assists in 27 regular season appearances (26 starts).
“Chris has been a key contributor for us since we acquired him last year, and we are thrilled to have secured his continued commitment to D.C. United,” said D.C. United General Manager and Vice President of Soccer Operations Dave Kasper. “His ability to create and score goals has been vital to the team, and he is among a group of important veteran leaders in the locker room.”
The 2015 campaign is the fourth in Rolfe’s nine seasons in MLS that he has recorded at least eight goals in a season and the eighth time that he has scored at least six. With 64 career goals, he is ninth among active MLS players and 27th all-time, and he is 20th among active players with 32 assists. He is tied for third in Major League Soccer this season with five game-winning goals. His streak earlier this season of four consecutive games with a goal or an assist is tied for the third-longest in MLS in 2015.
Rolfe, 32, was acquired in April 2014 from the Chicago Fire in exchange for General Allocation Money. A third-round pick out of Dayton in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, Rolfe had 48 goals and 22 assists over eight seasons with the Fire. He also spent three seasons with Danish Superliga club Aalborg BK, where he played in 32 matches and tallied six goals, and he has 10 career appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team. Rolfe made 21 appearances (20 starts) for D.C. United last season, finishing with six goals and six assists.
