D.C. United forward Chris Rolfe has scored the most goals against the Columbus Crew among all active players in MLS. The talented forward has found the net eight times against the Eastern Conference opponent.
Rolfe has already recorded three goals for the Black-and-Red, having only joined the team in April. The crafty Ohio native doesn’t only create for himself though, having assisted on three goals as well.
“Chris reads the game at lightning speed, and he can hurt you with his passing, dribbling or shooting,” said General Manager Dave Kasper. “He keeps opposing defenders on their heels.”
Head Coach Ben Olsen called him a “big pick up” after beating Houston 2-0, a game in which Rolfe had both the game-winner and the assist on the team’s second tally. With an ability to play out wide as well as up top, Rolfe is certainly making an impact in D.C.
“He finds great spots on the field, and he is terrific in both the counter and build-up play,” Kasper added.
His understanding of the game helps him play in different spots, quickly figuring out how to combine with any player whether it is Fabián Espíndola, Perry Kitchen or Eddie Johnson. Unsurprisingly, Rolfe has been one of the most effective players in MLS, having tallied 51 career goals.
A “savvy pro,” as Olsen called him, Rolfe’s goal-scoring prowess has proved timely for United, as two of his three tallies were game-winners. With the third meeting between the Black-and-Red and the Crew this Saturday, Rolfe’s productivity against Columbus and habit of scoring game-winning-goals could combine nicely for three points at FedExField.
