Academy update - U-16

U-16 Academy - 2012

D.C. United’s U-16 academy matchup with the Baltimore Bays was a little bit tighter than the U-18’s, but the Black-and-Red came away with a 1-0 defeat. The lone goal of the match came in the first half when Chrisophe Koffi finished a rebound on Gerson Umana’s shot inside the 18-yard box.

The squad showed a lot of discipline and heart as the team was forced to play a man down for the remaining 30 minutes of the game after a United player was shown a second yellow and subsequently was sent off. Despite being down a man, the Black-and-Red continued to push forward, creating scoring chances but failing to put one away.

“As expected, it was an extremely competitive match. Our defensive group was put to the test, even more so with having to play down a man for the second half. Goalkeepers and defensive players rarely get the glitz, but this positive showing was a culmination of that group putting in a lot of hard work at training, and staying organized and disciplined throughout the entire match. They were exceptional, and we were proud of the entire team's efforts against a quality opponent, but the group in the back definitely stood out,” said Tom Torres, head coach of D.C. United’s U-16 Academy team.

Both academy teams will be off this upcoming weekend and will play next on Sunday, October 28 against Potomac at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va.
