The Black-and-Red defeated United Soccer League (USL) side Saint Louis FC 3-0 at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater, Fla., in their second match of the 2017 Rowdies Suncoast Invitational on Wed. Feb 22.
United went into halftime with a 1-0 lead after Alhaji Kamara opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a first-time finish from a Lamar Neagle cross.
D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid came off the bench to replace Travis Worra for the second half and kept a clean sheet in his first 45 minutes of action this preseason after aggravating the lateral meniscus of his right knee during training in preparation for the U.S. Men's National Team January camp.
Lamar Neagle recorded his second assist of the game in the 58th minute when he picked out offseason acquisition SĆ©bastien Le Toux with a quickly-taken free kick. The Frenchman took the ball in stride and chipped the oncoming goalkeeper to extend D.C. Unitedās lead to 2-0.
The Black-and-Red added a late goal in the second half when Saint Louis FC failed to deal with a Lloyd Sam pass and Patrick Nyarko was able to get the final touch to tap the ball into an empty net.
United made 10 changes in the second half as they continue to build match fitness in preparation for the 2017 MLS regular season.
After the win, Unitedās 2017 preseason record is now 3-1-1.The Black-and-Red continue to train in Clearwater, Fla., prior to playing their final match against the Philadelphia Union on Feb. 24 at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida.
D.C. United play their 2017 regular season opener against Sporting Kansas City on Mar. 4 at RFK Stadium.
