United wrapped up preseason with a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Union at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla.
In their first game in the newly unveiled 2017 secondary kits, the Black-and-Red took an early lead in the first half, netting three goals in 10 minutes, to finish the half with a 3-0 lead.
Patrick Nyarko broke the deadlock in the 14th minute after he beat a defender in the box and slotted it past Union goalkeeper, Andre Blake. Jared Jeffrey then added a second goal in the 21st minute when Luciano Acosta crossed a ball into the six yard box that Jeffrey flicked into the far corner.
After putting pen to paper on a new multi-year deal on Feb. 21, forward Patrick Mullins scored United’s final goal three minutes later with a spectacular effort from 25 yards out. The 24-year-old beat the defender and curled the ball into the top left corner with a left-footed strike.
Philadelphia had a late rally when Oguchi Onyewu scored in the 51st minute and Marcus Epps added a second in the 86th but the Black-and-Red defense held on to preserve the win. The victory took United’s 2017 preseason record to 4-1-1; scoring 18 and conceding nine.
United return home Sunday and will spend the week training in preparation for their season opener against Sporting Kansas City at 7:00 PM on Mar. 4 at RFK Stadium.
